Come on let’s face it we don’t do ourselves any favours when it comes to ensuring we get a good nights sleep.
Part of your bedtime routine may consist of replying to emails, watching You Tube videos, engaging in social media, Netflix, playing games on your tablet or just watching good old fashioned TV.
But in your quest to wind down, what you are actually doing is not going to help in fact it is doing the opposite.
And this my dear friends is due to a thing called Cognitive Stimulation, as your brain kicks up a gear, its electrical activity increases and neurons start to race. The exact opposite of what should you need to happen to your body before sleep.
Not only that but the bright lights you are looking at as they pass through your retina delay the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.
Now throw into the mix a few worries, a personal situation that is playing on your mind and making you stressed. As you get stressed, your body goes into a “fight or flight” response, and as a result, cortisol, a stress hormone produced by the adrenal gland, is released. Not good news for a restful nights sleep.
Now I am pretty good at leaving my worries either at work or packing them in a box at night, however I am not so great at unplugging myself from technology which means I often find it hard to get off to sleep.
Until now that is I think I may have found the perfect bedtime routine and it involves this magnificently simple product…
I saw this product advertised and my first thought was “ What a gimmick “.
The Deep Sleep Pillow Spray claims to be a” natural sleep aid Infused with essential oils of Lavender, Vetivert and Wild Camomile to soothe the body and mind and calm the nerves.”
With such high statistics (100 % of users would recommend to a friend) I had to try it out either this product is good or people have some mean friends that like to see you waste your money.
So I purchased a small 5 ml spray to try it out this way I wasn’t wasting money, which would further keep me awake at night worrying about bankruptcy.
I sprayed my pillow with this just before I bedded down for the night; the lavender smell is noticeable but not overpowering and actually makes it feel like you are sleeping in a freshly changed bed every night. Surprisingly on night two I was off to the land of nod within ten or so minutes and after a week or so it is now down to five minutes as opposed to the previous pre use thirty minutes to an hour. Not only do I fall asleep quicker but also I seem to sleep deeper and as a result have experienced some rather odd dreams.
Dreaming more is great news as this happens during the REM stage of sleep, which occurs around 90 minutes in and is your deepest sleep state. Excitedly during REM this is also when the body repairs and regrows tissues, builds bone and muscle, and strengthens the immune system.
So the longer I am in REM the healthier I get.
I must also add that thirty minutes before sleep I switch have from technology and read a few pages from a book or pop on a facemask and relax.
I think this spray is brilliant and I highly recommend it to anybody that struggles to get off to a good nights sleep. Give it a go you can purchase a small size from EBay and it will only cost you just over £3.
Sweet dreams people….
